Field Day: A tradition of team spirit and fun

When physical education teacher Gene Love joined EMS in 1988, Field Day looked nothing like today. There were no seventh and eighth graders, no official field — just a grassy area for games. Participation was limited, and choices were few.

But over the years, Love and his team have transformed Field Day into a day of fun, where, as he puts it, “Anyone can be a star.”

Students are sorted into two teams — green and white — maintaining records dating back to the ’80s. If your parent was on the green team, so are you, passing down the rivalry through generations.

Cartoon of Mr. Love figured out who is on team green and who is on team white for Field Day.

Students choose from various events: frisbee, javelin throw, potato sack races, and three-legged races. Regardless of the outcome, every student receives a ribbon for participating in this cherished tradition. The day concludes with a spirited tug-of-war, friendly handshakes, and a barbecue.

This year, fifth grader Camellia G. will experience her first Field Day on Friday, May 10. She starts a new generation of Field Day stars in the family (brother Theo is still in Little School). She will be on the white team, following in the footsteps of her EMS alum parents, Adriel and Candace, who were both proud members of the white team. Adriel, a “speed racer,’” recalls the thrill, while Candace is remembered as a tug-of-war expert.

“I’ve been hearing about Field Day for years from my family,” says Camellia, “I’ve always wanted to take part, and this year it’s my turn to be on the white team!”

EMS prepares students for an impressive range of top-tier secondary schools.

Our students cultivate the ability to learn, think, explore, empathize, and lead. They graduate with the ability, mindset, and competencies to navigate a global world and are well-prepared to face an unknowable future.

Accustomed to a challenging academic environment, EMS students welcome the demands of competitive secondary schools and are often placed in advanced sections where they perform very well.
