Welcome, New Families!

Resources

You’ll find detailed information regarding our school policies in the EMS Family Handbook and on myEMS, available to new families in July. In the meantime, please find general guidance below.

School-Day Schedule

Please find a printable year-at-a-glance calendar of the 2024–25 school year here. The school-day schedule will be available on myEMS in early July.

EMS Family Handbook

Our school’s family handbook includes important information, including arrival and dismissal schedules; After Care program details, carline expectations; attendance; closures and delays; safety and security; dress code; lunch program; food policy; procedures for visiting campus; class schedules and placement; standardized testing; student progress; tutoring; student learning services; music education; summer homework; parent education; code of behavior; use of technology; health guidelines; spring break and summer programs; fundraising; Parents Association, and more.

The handbook will be available in myEMS, our school’s internal, password-protected website, in early July.

School Communications

Communication between families and the school is essential for the success of each student at The Elisabeth Morrow School. The school will share information in the following ways.

myEMS

myEMS, our school’s internal, password-protected website, houses important information, including our latest EMS Family Handbook; school calendars (plus instructions on how to add them to your Google calendar); our Back-to-School packet with helpful information and links to prepare students and families for the start of the new school year; instructions on how to use our SchoolPass attendance app; report cards; attendance records; class schedule(s); class roster(s); health forms and instructions; details on our lunch program; after care program registration; Wednesday Envelope archive; discussion guides to help families address difficult topics; tuition assistance; photo albums of school events; concert videos, and more.

The school will notify new families in early July when they have set up an account for them in myEMS and will provide instructions for logging in and setting a new password. For any assistance logging into myEMS, families should reach out to the registrar at registrar@elisabethmorrow.org.

Kaymbu (Chilton House only)

Early learning teachers will share access to Kaymbu with all Chilton House families, and parents can adjust their notification and email preferences directly within the platform.

Seesaw (Little School only)

Select grades in lower school teachers will share access to Seesaw with families, and parents/guardinas can adjust their notification and email preferences within the platform.

Family and Faculty Directories

These directories, available in print and online, are solely for the personal use of families enrolled at EMS and are not to be used for any other purposes. Printed family directories are distributed in the fall. Our faculty and staff directory is available online throughout the year.

Wednesday Envelope (weekly email)

This is the most consistent form of communication from the school, emailed at 6 a.m. every Wednesday morning when classes are in session. Past issues from the school year are archived in myEMS.

Emergency Alerts

These automated messages sent by phone, text, and/or email notify families of an imminent event or school closing.

Apple Tree Magazine (annual)

Our magazine celebrates our academic innovations; student, faculty, and alumni successes; our school’s traditions and history; and items of interest to the broader EMS community. The school typically produces two editions each year. Read our last issue!

Transportation

Families drop off and pick up their children at school through a process called “carline.” School maintenance personnel and faculty members supervise both the morning and afternoon carlines at school, and all drivers must follow their signals. The Elisabeth Morrow School also offers bus transportation between our campus and neighborhoods in New Jersey and New York City.

Buses

For details regarding transportation, please visit our Transportation page.

After sign-up deadlines pass, additional seating on established bus routes will be offered to families contingent upon availability. Service for new students will be supported and additional requests on established routes will be made as they may be accommodated.

Carline

Carline is the system we use to help all students get to and from their cars at arrival and dismissal. The three divisions (Chilton House, Little School, and Morrow House) each use their own “carline” system to make drop-off and pick-up efficient and safe for students and families.

Detailed instructions are in our handbook and will also be shared by division heads prior to the first day of school.

Parents Association

All parents and caregivers of EMS students are automatically members of the Parents Association (PA), and we encourage all families to become engaged in PA events and committees. The Parents Association strives to foster an inclusive sense of community; support and express appreciation for the faculty and staff; offer a forum where EMS families can convey issues of interest; provide parent education; create social opportunities for students and parents; and help connect families to each other.

The PA is run by eight parent volunteers, who serve as officers of the PA Executive Board. It is funded by annual family dues and through its fundraising events.

A few highlights of PA activities include the welcome breakfast, Fall Festival, community service drives, International Food Festival, and the Book Fair and Storytelling Festival.

For more information please email pa@elisabethmorrow.org.

Affinity Groups

These identity-specific spaces provide participants with the opportunity to explore, affirm, nurture, and learn about lived experiences based on a shared identity and celebrate our commitment to equity, inclusivity, and, most importantly, belonging. More affinity group details, along with a list of facilitators for specific groups, is available in myEMS.

Instrumental Music Program

Every student in third through eighth grade participates in our nationally renowned instrumental music program, with classes offered three times a week as part of the regular school day. This results in a school in which every student is actively engaged in making music. Through playing an instrument, our students benefit from the joy of creating music together in school while providing life-long benefits to the brain.

Parents or guardians of rising third-graders and any new EMS students entering fourth through eighth grades will need to select an instrument to play. Families will receive an email during the summer with instructions for indicating their instrument selection, as well as information from their child(ren)’s music teacher that includes guidance on where to buy or rent instruments.

Please contact Assistant Director of the Arts and Arts Division Administrator James Kanal with any questions.

Dress Code

The EMS dress code honors our school’s tradition of community, equity, individuality, connectivity, inclusivity, and school spirit.

EMS Dress Code

  • Bottoms: Bottoms should allow for freedom of movement and outdoor learning. This feels different on different bodies, and we trust families to determine the appropriate length of bottoms for their child. Students may wear dress pants, slacks, chinos, corduroy pants, skirts, dresses, or any solid-color casual pants (joggers, shorts, sweatpants, or leggings). No jeans (pants or shorts) are permitted.
  • Tops: All tops must be hip length. Students may wear blouses, collared shirts, turtlenecks, dress shirts, crewneck or V-neck sweaters, cardigans, and vests. Casual tops (T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, joggers, and quarter-zip tops) that feature the EMS seal or eagle mascot are also permitted, including tops provided by the school (e.g., Field Day, Summer Explorations, Eagle Arts Academy, the EMS Summer String Festival, Adventure Week, etc.).
  • Shoes: Footwear must be worn at all times. We highly recommend sneakers. Students may also wear dress or casual shoes or boots. All shoes must be closed-toe. Sandals, backless shoes, and slides are not permitted (e.g. cozy Uggs with no backs or Crocs).

Other than to make adjustments for proper fit if needed, please do not alter clothing. (Clothing cut off at the neck, midriff, or sleeves is not permitted).

Additional information about the EMS dress code, including guidance for “dress-down days,” “special occasions” (including cultural dress), and “concert dress” will be available in the EMS Family Handbook, available in July.

School Store

This will be your go-to place for branded spirit wear and accessories to show pride in our school! The Parents Association has also arranged for dress-code-compliant EMS-branded items to be available for purchase through a partnership with Lands’ End (open year-round) and Sportstime and Likewear online pop-up shops (offered at intervals throughout the school year).

Health Guidelines

Our health guidelines are outlined on myEMS. A few important things to make note of include:

Magnus Health

The school uses an online student medical records (SMR) service called Magnus Health, which collects all medical and emergency forms required by the state of N.J. All forms must be submitted directly to Magnus, accessed through myEMS.

The state of New Jersey requires the SMR to be up-to-date before the start of the school year. Therefore, your child(ren) will not be able to return to school without all of the requirements being completed in Magnus.

Magnus has developed an app to make it easier for you to update and upload requirements. The app is called “Magnus Mobile V2.” Download the Magnus Mobile V2 app for Android on Google Play or for iPhone through the Apple App Store. For any questions regarding downloading or using the app, please contact the Magnus help desk at 877-461-6831.

Emergency Contacts

We require that you provide us with at least three emergency contacts, and two of them must live within an hour of travel time to assist in case an ill child needs to be picked up from school.

Vaccinations

EMS follows all New Jersey state guidelines regarding vaccinations. You can find the required vaccine schedule online for ages 2–4 and kindergarten–eighth grade.

Allergies

Families must provide the school nurse with a list of their child’s allergies with an Anaphylaxis Action Plan.

Medication

If a child needs to receive any medication while at school, including inhalers, EpiPens, and all over-the-counter medications, we must have written authorization from a parent/guardian and your child’s physician indicating the medication, dosage, time of administration, and duration of treatment.

School Supplies

Information will be available in myEMS in early July.

Spring Break & Summer Programs

The Elisabeth Morrow School has several programs to provide care and enrichment for students during spring break and summer.

Spring Break Mini Camp

This week-long program is offered during one of the two weeks of spring vacation and features programs and activities for students age 4 through sixth grade.

Eagle Arts Week

In the week following the end of school, EMS offers a week of arts, athletics, and adventure activities for EMS students only. This summer program takes place in one week in June and offers two tracks: One is for our current instrumental musicians entering Kindergarten through ninth grade, and another is for students entering the 3s program through third grade and guides students through exploration and learning in STEAM. Program details are posted on our website in the spring.

Summer Explorations

Summer Explorations is the summer program of The Elisabeth Morrow School, with activities taught by many EMS teachers, along with certified, experienced teachers from the surrounding communities. Weekly sessions offer a unique blend of camp and school, with a wide variety of enrichment and academic choices. Open for EMS and non-EMS students from age 2 to ninth grade.

Summer String Festival

Founded in 1996, this one-week music program in August combines an intense pre-professional music experience with the fun of camp. It’s limited to 150 students, selected via audition, and brings together the best young violinists, violists, and cellists from around the country, with international participation as well. The program culminates with a dynamic gala concert where students shine, performing with orchestras they’ve been working with throughout the week.

Billing and Financial Aid

Families can handle billing agreements and payments through an online system called TADS. The business office works with families to provide flexible payment options and help them manage their tuition balances. (As a reminder, total tuition and fees for the academic year are provided online.) Please direct any questions regarding billing and payment plans to our accounts receivable coordinator by email or call (201) 568-5566 ext. 7105.

Financial Aid information is available online in the EMS Family Handbook, Appendix A: Financial Aid. For questions regarding financial assistance, please call our admissions office at 201-568-5566 ext. 7212 or email admissions@elisabethmorrow.org.
