Morrow House Students Earn Top Scores in American Mathematics Contest 8

Elisabeth Morrow School

In November, 47 students in Morrow House chose to participate in the American Mathematics Contest 8 (AMC 8), sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America. The contest challenges students to apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment. The 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice assessment in middle school mathematics is designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. Peter Everett, Middle School Math Department Chair, reported some exciting highlights from the contest:

  • Eighth-grader Julianna Dail earned the top score among EMS students, which also means that she was the top performer in her grade. Her performance also qualified to put her in the top 5 percent nationally!

  • Eighth-graders Anna Cho, Junmo Kang, and Raman Mitta tied for second place in their grade.

  • Seventh-graders Zayden Li and Kevin Wei tied for the top spot in their grade, with Sahil Chauhan placing third.

  • Sixth-grader Zening Zhao earned the top spot in the sixth grade, and his score earned him a spot in the top 5 percent nationally too, joining eighth-grader Julianna Dail. Other top finishers in the grade included sixth-graders Cristiano Santiago, who placed second, and Norah Wang, who placed third.

  • Fifth-grader Marcus Li took the top spot in his grade, with fellow fifth-graders Riley Man and Olivia Verrillo tied for second place.

EMS is proud of all of our participants in AMC 8. Competitions like this can sharpen focus and encourage performance to the highest level. Students may reach out to Mr. Everett to get more specific information about their results.
