In Memoriam: Sandra Agemian Borg

Sandra Borg, circa 1970s at EMS

We are sad to hear of the loss of an important member of our community.

Trustee Emerita Sandra A. Borg, who has been at the heart of our community for six decades, passed away on Aug. 8, 2022.

For its 90th Anniversary Gala last year, the school honored Sandra, her husband, Malcolm (Mac), and their children and grandchildren for their incredible generosity and service to our community for three generations.

Sandra, known as Sandy, joined The Elisabeth Morrow School community upon enrolling her children, John ’74, Jennifer ’77, and Stephen ’80, P’21. She quickly became involved with the Parents Association and later served as its president. Her son, Stephen, recalls her work with the PA’s Welcome Wagon (pictured: above, left with Nancy Benzel), ensuring that new families quickly felt at home in a community united by shared values.

Sandy served on the school’s Board of Trustees from 1974 to 1985 and was involved with our
Development and Building & Grounds committees. As a consummate connector, she worked diligently on fundraising efforts, and established and maintained the records of alumni and former parents. She also served as Chair of the Nominating Committee that helped bring former Head of School Richard A. Davies to EMS in 1981, following the retirement of Constance Chilton, who founded The Little School in 1930 with Elisabeth Morrow.

Sandy had key involvement with “Delicious,” an EMS cookbook (1984), which was the result of more than a year of volunteer effort that involved coordinating large groups to create, test, and review recipes. Former Trustee Bob Gambee ’52 knew Sandy as a stalwart and loving friend. He described working with her as “great fun.” Her enthusiasm and drive were an inspiration.
Sandy graduated from the Dwight School for Girls, now Dwight-Englewood School, in 1957, and Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., in 1961.

During her professional career, Sandy held the positions of board vice chair of Macromedia Inc., and director of the Bergen Record Corporation. She contributed to our community as a volunteer with several organizations, including Dwight-Englewood, Junior League of Bergen County, John Harms Theater (now bergenPAC), and the Hackensack University Medical Center Bio-Ethics Committee.

A memorial service/celebration of life for Sandy will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 at St. Paul’s Church in Englewood with a reception immediately following at Arcola Country Club in Paramus.

Sandy is survived by Mac, her husband of 60 years, children John ’74, Jennifer ’77, Stephen ’80, P’21, and his wife, Monica P’21; grandchildren Alexander, Austin, Charles, and William ’21; her sister, Mary Lou Heath

(Michael), also a former trustee; and nieces Jacqueline Carrillo ’83 and Carolyn Heath ’84. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Mary Agemian, and niece, Christine Heath, who attended EMS prior to her family’s relocation overseas.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Sandra Borg’s memory be sent to a favorite charity or to Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation, 343 Thornall St., 7th Floor, Edison, NJ 08837.

Accustomed to a challenging academic environment, EMS students welcome the demands of competitive secondary schools and are often placed in advanced sections where they perform very well.
