Physical Education & Athletics

At The Elisabeth Morrow School, we believe deeply in the value of physical activity and the lifelong lessons students gain through sports and athletics. For this reason, being part of a team builds confidence, resilience, and leadership. Beyond that, it teaches students how to collaborate, communicate, and persevere — skills that reach far beyond the playing field.

Although age-appropriate physical education looks a bit different in each of our divisions, our curriculum nonetheless builds on the lessons of each year prior to ensure that our students develop physical literacy and social-emotional skills. In other words, they feel comfortable and competent in their bodies and equipped to make healthy decisions about exercise and future athletic and recreational activities.

Throughout this process, all students have the opportunities and encouragement to reach their potential while progressing at their own rates. We start by building healthy activity in our Chilton House students (age 2–K), focusing on their gross and fine motor control. Following this, our Little School students (grades 1–4) learn how to maintain a healthy level of physical activity and fitness that they can continue throughout their lives. Finally, our Morrow House students (grades 5–8) learn about teamwork and sportsmanship through group activities. Consequently, by the time they graduate, our students have had ample opportunities to apply these skills to team sports, from cross country to lacrosse.

In lieu of physical education classes, seventh- and eighth-grade students select a sport or class to take in the fall, winter, and spring. All students are able to play on their desired team; tryouts are not necessary.

The sports offered vary based on season and students’ interests. In past years, we have offered cross country (co-ed), soccer (co-ed), girls basketball, boys A and B basketball, girls volleyball, girls tennis, boys tennis, girls lacrosse, boys lacrosse, girls softball, ice skating, squash, and yoga and PE “Fiit” (fun intensity interval training) classes. In addition, we have offered intramural sports and a bike club elective during the spring semester.
