Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III and the Board of Chosen Freeholders, in partnership with the Bergen County African American Advisory Committee, presented Head of School Dr. Maureen Fonseca with an award for Education Contribution during this year’s Black History Month celebration on February 11, 2020.
A graduate of Vassar College and Fordham University, Dr. Fonseca began her more than 30-year career in education as a French and Spanish teacher for both high school and college students. In 1988, she founded St. Philip’s Academy in Newark, a school designed to help inner-city students succeed in competitive secondary schools. Then, she spent 15 years as The Masters School head of school, followed by serving as CEO of Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation/New York Edge. She has been at The Elisabeth Morrow School since 2019.
This year’s Bergen County Black History Month theme was: African Americans and the Vote. It marked the 150th anniversary of the 15th Amendment (1870), which gave black men the right to vote during the Civil War.
