Separated by plexiglass, and joined by remote partners on Zoom, our fifth-graders dove into the plant unit in science class in December. In-person learners planted tiny Fast Plants — plants that grow quickly, produce flowers and seed pods, and then die — while remote learners set up at-home experiments with bean seeds. Together, students collected data, shared photos, and discussed ideas about what plants need to grow. In May, after the students let the plants and pods dry out, the seeds were ready to harvest. The original seeds for this year’s lesson came from last year’s fifth-grade class. Next year, fifth-graders will plant the seeds that were just harvested.
