EMS Students Advance to State Math League Competition

Two regional Math League competitions took place at EMS in December. Seventy-nine EMS students participated in this rigorous competition hosted by Math League, a network of local and state math competitions at elementary, middle and high school levels in the U.S. and internationally. Grades three through eight competed in four meets: Number Sense, Target, Sprint, and Team. For three hours each day of the competition, the Cohen Center was abuzz with more than 240 students from 20 different schools in the Northern New Jersey area. Teams in brightly colored T-shirts worked together to solve difficult math problems. The entire EMS faculty witnessed Math in Focus at work as our students felt confident enough to attempt challenging math problems, both individually and as a team. Top scorers from both competitions — including 22 EMS students — were invited to compete in the state Math League championships in April.
