Arts Department Chair Amelia Gold, a violin and orchestra teacher, participated in a live round-table discussion about the powerful effects of music on the brain at SiriusXM studios. “Ask the Good Doctor” host Dr. LaJoyce Brookshire, a nationally recognized naturopathic doctor, master herbalist, and “New York Times” bestselling author, interviewed Gold, along with Broadway stars Jacob Gutierrez (Aladdin from “Aladdin”); Adrienne Walker (Nala from “The Lion King”); and Chad Burris (Olaf from “Frozen”).
“There are so many reasons that playing an instrument and interacting within the performing arts are important for all people, specifically children,” Gold says. “Music is one of the only activities that engages both the right side and the left side of the brain. Performing arts takes tremendous focus and brings a person into a state of flow. This focus can be trained over time. Most people think that playing an instrument or participating in the theater is ‘fun.’ However, it is essential as human beings are the only species that have the ability to create art.”
