By creating their own surveys and then conducting field research, our 4th graders are able to assess a lot of data on their peers, from which they can use math to find the average of all the measurements. How tall is the average 4th grader? How old are they?

About Math at EMS
Mathematics is a fundamental part of students’ lives at EMS.
Our youngest learners explore basic mathematical concepts and develop their skills and understanding of place value, mental math, and geometry. They acquire math vocabulary and literacy through tackling real-world problems. Students also engage with mathematics throughout the STEAM curriculum and strengthen their computational thinking, reasoning, and logic.
As students progress, they communicate mathematical thinking and compute with increasing accuracy and speed, begin to recognize patterns and relationships in numbers as they explore statistics, and use models, patterns, illustrations, and tables to problem-solve.
As students enter middle school, they analyze the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percentages and use number sense to determine the reasonableness of answers. Students begin to work with rational numbers and learn basic algebraic ideas in preparation for pre-algebra. At this time, students are grouped based on performance criteria to ensure that individuals at all levels of understanding are supported and challenged. The curriculum at this time is focused on word problems learning how to solve and graph equations and inequalities. In their final year at EMS, they study a rigorous Algebra I or Geometry curriculum.

EMS prepares students for an impressive range of top-tier secondary schools.
Our students cultivate the ability to learn, think, explore, empathize, and lead. They graduate with the ability, mindset, and competencies to navigate a global world and are well-prepared to face an unknowable future.
EMS students are accustomed to a rigorous academic environment and welcome the demands of competitive secondary schools. They are often placed in advanced sections where they perform very well.
