In art today we dyed yarn. First we gathered the materials that we needed. We used acorns, pokeberries, onion skins, tea and other things. The next thing was that Mrs. Hantman soaked the plain white yarn in alum and water. This helps the yarn soak up the colors. Next, we mixed water with the things we gathered and heated them. Then we put in the yarn and Mrs. Hantman heated it again. When she took the yarn out of the pot, it looked like the color of the dye. She put the yarn on plastic trays to let it dry. It was an interesting project.
Yarn Dyeing
By Bobby
On Wednesday we dyed yarn but before I tell you
about that, I want to tell you about gathering materials for it.
First, David brought in 6 bags of acorns when we only needed 2. Second,
I brought in onion skins and finally, the other classes collected everything
else. That morning Miss Hantman soaked yarn in water and alum. Then
we made a heated dye bath (with matter root inside of it) because there
are other things that make different colors. She put the yarn in
the yarn bath and cooked it again. We got to try dyeing the yarn
and when it was done it looked like spaghetti.
The third graders also studied the Matisse
cut-outs and then created some of their own.
