MOLLUSKS of the forest: Snails, Slugs

Physical Description: The soft body of the mollusk is called its "foot" because they use it to move. On the snail's body, the foot can withdraw into a hard shell. The slug has no shell, just a foot with a "mantle" where the shell would sit if it were a snail. The mantle is the muscular area that covers the internal organs of the mollusk. The snail has scraping mouth parts.

Habitat: gardens, forest

Niche: Snails and slugs are herbivores, feeding on plant material.

Snails have a hard shell.

Slugs have no shell.

Snail eggs look like tiny pearls in the soil.
